Titleist Pro V1 vs Pro V1x

The Titleist Pro V1. The ball that changed the game. And that’s not being dramatic. It really did change the game. It quickly became the most popular ball in golf and has stayed that way ever since. It wasn’t until three years later in 2003 that its greatest rival would be launched, its own sister, the Pro V1x.

Titleist Pro V1x Golf Balls

Titleist Pro V1x golf balls are designed for serious golfers looking for maximum spin and control. They feature a high-speed, high-spin design that provides longer, straighter shots off the tee. The Pro V1x’s multi-component construction includes a high-energy, ZG process core and urethane elastomer cover. These features work together to provide excellent distance, control, and durability. Whether you’re looking to improve your game or play at a high level, Titleist Pro V1x golf balls are a great choice for golfers who prioritize distance and control.

Around 40% of PGA Tour pros use a Pro V1 and 29% use a Pro V1x. The other 31% is split between other ball manufacturers such as TaylorMade, Callaway, Bridgestone and Srixon. The success of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf is nothing short of phenomenal and their stranglehold on the golf ball manufacturing game is clear for all to see.

But what is it that makes these balls so good and, more importantly, what makes them different from each other? If the Pro V1 is so successful, why did Titleist feel the need to launch the Pro V1x? And who should use the Pro V1 and who should use the Pro V1x?

For all these answers, you don’t need to look far as this article will cover each of them!

Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x Comparison

The relationship between the Pro V1 and Pro V1x isn’t quite as simple as it seems. When the Pro V1x was released in 2003 alongside the second-generation Titleist Pro V1 golf ball, golfers understood one thing. The Pro V1x spun less than the Pro V1. The Pro V1x was designed to be a higher-flying but lower-spinning golf ball and that’s what it was…for 14 years.

In 2017, Titleist changed this. The Pro V1x was still a higher-flying golf ball, but now it was also a higher-spinning golf ball. Titleist has retained these changes and a full description can be seen below.

Comparison of Pro V1 and Pro V1x

In order to achieve these differences, the two balls have certain similarities but also certain differences. The Pro V1 is a three-piece ball while the Pro V1x is a four-piece. There is also a difference in dimple count with the Pro V1 having 388 and the Pro V1x having 348.

When it comes to similarities, the balls feature the same Softer Core Urethane Elastomer Cover System to increase greenside spin. A faster low spin casing layer adds speed and lowers long game spin, a Reformulated 2.0 ZG Process Dual Core increases distance and while the dimple number may differ, they are both designed with a new Spherically-tiled Tetrahedral Dimple Design to deliver high and consistent flight.

Titleist highlights that both are designed for “All players that prioritize performance” while the Pro V1x is for “All players that prioritize performance, and need or want higher flight and spin”. They come at a premium price point of $50 per dozen and will suit lower handicaps.

Who Should Play the Titleist Pro V1 Golf Ball

As mentioned above, Titleist outlined the Pro V1 is for players seeking premium performance and is especially suited to lower handicappers. It offers fantastic control both with the long game and around the greens.

If golfers are seeking a ball with a more penetrating ball flight, less iron and driver spin and a softer feel, then the Pro V1 is perfect. Less driver and iron spin mean more accuracy and less spin on approach shots, however, if you are a slower swinger of the club – say less than 100 mph – then you struggle to get a high ball flight and lose a considerable amount of distance as a result. In this case, the Pro V1 would not be suitable for you.

The Pro V1 is perfect for low handicappers who find their drives launching too high or their irons spinning too much. Some mid-handicappers will also benefit from the Pro V1, but only if they have a strong long game and fast clubhead speed.

Anyone who does use the Pro V1 will follow leading professionals such as Will Zalatoris, Max Homa, Lydia Ko and Jessica Korda.

Who Should Play the Pro V1x

The Pro V1x has a slightly firmer feel than the Pro V1 and is designed to launch higher with more spin. While it retains the fantastic short-game control of the Pro V1, it is very different when it comes to the long game.

As with the Pro V1 above, it is for better players but the Pro V1x golf ball is slightly more accessible. On account of launching higher, it will also suit lower swing speeds which means that it could suit seniors or a greater selection of mid-low handicappers. Seniors who may no longer be able to compress the ball as they like but still want to retain the great feel and control of a Pro V1 will find the Pro V1x a great substitute. Some golfers have even reported an increase of up to 15 yards on their drives, simply because of the higher launch.

Some professional golfers using the Pro V1x include Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Joo-Hyung Kim and Danielle Kang.

Differences Between the Pro V1 and Pro V1x

Even though the Pro V1 and Pro V1x are both premium balls offering exceptional performance there are marked differences between the two golf balls. While much of the construction is similar, the Pro V1 is a three-piece construction while the Pro V1x is a four-piece construction. The Pro V1 also has more dimples at 388 than the Pro V1x at 348, which affects performance.

The Pro V1 is a softer ball with a more penetrating ball flight and less spin on long game shots, making it ideal for golfers with a high clubhead speed who find they get too much spin with their driver and irons. The Titleist Pro V1x, on the other hand, launches high, is a bit firmer and spins more. This will suit golfers who struggle to get the ball into the air and may not have a very high swing speed.

Other Companies “x” Balls

I think other ball manufacturers have stuck to the original idea of the “x” version of their ball being the lower spin one. This makes for an interesting question. Should we be comparing the TP5x, Chrome Soft X, Srixon Z-Star XV, etc to the Pro V1 now that Titleist has swapped the performance of the balls round and made the Pro V1x the spinnier model? I suppose based on spin rates there could be an argument made although the Pro V1x is still slightly firmer than the Pro V1.

New Versions Of The Titleist Pro V1 And Pro V1x

For a while now the No.1 ball manufacturer has been releasing new versions of these balls every two years. The last release was in 2021 and the next iteration is due in early 2023.

Titleist Pro V1 vs Pro V1x: Summary

Regardless of which ball you choose to play with, both the Pro V1 and Pro V1x are premium balls. There’s a reason they are #1 and #2 on the market and almost 70% of PGA Tour players use one ball or the other. Both balls offer superb feel around the greens but there are small but important differences when it comes to the long game.

Golfers with a high ball flight and high swing speed should choose the Pro V1 and golfers with a slower swing speed who struggle to get the ball in the air should go with the Pro V1x. The best way to truly know which ball suits you though is by trying them both out!
