Introduction

I don’t know about you but I love to spend an hour or so browsing through a golf store looking at all the latest equipment releases.

To be honest, I probably spend the vast majority of my golf budget with online stores though.

It’s just so much more convenient to have access to an almost infinite range of products at the best possible prices. Unfortunately, your local golf store will find it almost impossible to compete.

Let’s take a look at the best online options to spend your dollars/pounds/euro et cetera.

This is far from a definitive list but you should be able to find what you want in one the stores!

Stores Based in the USA and Canada

Starting with some manufacturer-specific stores.

Callaway Golf

One of the biggest names in golf and they offer their full range of products in their online store.

You can take advantage of a number of personalization options including corporate logos if that’s what you need. You may also be able to take advantage of 0% financing on certain products.

If you’re looking for Callaway gear but can’t stretch to $500 for a new driver then you could try Callaway’s certified used equipment at Callaway Preowned.

Any club you buy from their pre-owned stock can be tried for up to 90 days and all are certified by Callaway Golf. If you take advantage of their 90-day policy you don’t receive cashback however it’s a percentage of what you paid as store credit.

Wake up as an added bonus Callaway also offers a trade-in scheme where you can send in your old clubs to receive credit against future purchases.

TaylorMade Golf

Another of the giants of the industry offers a full range of its products in its online store. If you want to follow in the footsteps of Tiger, Rory or DJ then this is the place to be.

You can take advantage of free shipping on certain orders.

The custom shop allows you to customize clubs to a dizzying degree. From more obvious options such as shaft flex all the way through to changing the color of your putter.

Interestingly the UK version of their site only seems to let you buy personalized versions of their products. If you wish to buy off the shelf then it looks like you need to visit an offline retailer.

They also offer a credit option Klarna.

Ping

In keeping with their custom-fit policy, Ping will only allow you to buy accessories and clothing online.

They do offer a number of online exclusives such as Ping Hoofer bags in the colors of selected universities.

Ben Hogan

Reinvented as a direct-to-consumer brand, the clubs bearing the name Ben Hogan are available through their website.

They have a full range of clubs and a small selection of accessories.

Take advantage of their trial program to find the right Hogan clubs for you. Just pay $20 to cover the shipping charges and you can try out a number of clubs for up to 14 days.

Trial clubs will only come with the option of different shafts.

Mizuno

An ever-popular choice among tour professionals Mizuno makes excellent golf clubs. It would appear, however, that the covid-19 induced golf boom has caught them on the hop somewhat. It’s difficult to find many clubs in stock via their website.

At the moment you would probably have better luck with their selection of accessories.

Now here are some general golf stores:

PGA Tour Superstore

For those who are a little reticent about buying online PGA Tour Superstore might offer a little reassurance.

They certainly aren’t the cheapest but they do have some reasonable deals on end-of-line clubs.

They offer free ground shipping in the USA on orders over $99 and will ship internationally but obviously, you will incur additional costs.

Global Golf

With a massive range of products available, global golf might be your one-stop shop for all your golfing needs.

Aside from plenty of great prices they also offer a trade-in program.

You can also try out single clubs or sets of irons using their U-Try program. A 14-day trial with a set of irons will cost you $50, if you’re not happy then just send them back.

Golf Discount

Golf discount is now approaching its 30th anniversary. A wide selection of the major brands with free shipping on orders over $99 for many orders.

Fairway Golf USA

While offering an array of US brands such as Titleist, Callaway and TaylorMade, Fairway Golf USA seems to be the place to go for Japanese brands.

Including well-known manufacturers such as Mizuno, Yamaha and Miura. They also stock less well-known brands such as PRGR, Fourteen, XXIO, Epon and Majesty Golf.

The company has been trading since 1991 in San Diego. If you live in that area you can take advantage of a TrackMan fitting at one of their two locations.

They also run a golf tournament every month and have organized a charity golf competition in aid of local schools for more than 20 years.

The Golf Warehouse

Offers a wide range of clubs from all the major manufacturers along with apparel, bags and other accessories.

Like many retailers, some of the biggest discounts are on shoes.

They offer a wide variety of shipping options including international. Although of course, you need to bear in mind you may have to pay import duties on top of any extra shipping costs.

Goes to show that golf doesn’t always have to be that expensive.

Carl’s Golfland

Originally began trading in Michigan in 1958 and now has two retail outlets.

Stocks clubs such as the ultra-expensive Honma Beres, through Ping and Cobra plus Tour Edge for the more cost-conscious consumer.

Has a good range of women’s clubs and also stocks equipment for juniors.

They will ship internationally, although certain products aren’t available outside of the USA.

You can also trade in your old clubs and receive a gift card for future purchases.

Rock Bottom Golf

Save more, play more is their slogan!

The company originally started out on eBay but eventually moved on to become a stand-alone business offering.

You can find both brand-new clubs from top manufacturers and also certified preowned equipment. Hopefully, this will save you quite a few dollars!

Rock Bottom Golf has a 90-day performance guarantee, although any refunds are in the form of store credit. You can also sell your old clubs to them.

Golf Etail

Although this company has been trading for 20 years it’s probably not the place to go if you’re looking for the top brands in golf. Indeed the selection of clubs on offer was very minimal.

What they did s the tock though was generally very competitively priced.

Might be a place to look out for clothing more than equipment.

Golf Galaxy

Part of Dick’s Sporting Goods empire. In addition to the online operation, it has a number of stores nationwide.

As with most golf stores, the biggest discounts can be found on clothing and footwear.

You may find the odd deep discount on clubs that have been discontinued.

Golf Outlets USA

Aiming squarely at the budget sector of the marketplace with brands such as RAM, Forgan, Macgregor and Lind Golf.

With sets of eight cavity back irons starting from $99.99 and drivers for less than $50 You could put together a cheap set of clubs if you are a beginner.

Golf balls are also pretty cheap coming in at around $0.50-$0.60 per ball for some of their bulk deals.

Golf Direct Now

Have been recipients of Ping’s Top 100 club-fitter award so clearly, they know their stuff. They offer free shipping in the lower 48 states on orders over $100. Interestingly, you can get custom embroidery done which is not a service I’ve seen offered by many other retailers.

GolfTown

A well-known Canadian retail chain that also offers online ordering.

During the  covid-19 pandemic, many stores have tried to pivot to online or allow customers to pick up curbside.

GolfTown stores offer a massive variety of products. They often have excellent deals available (I picked up a Vokey wedge there for around half the normal price).

Dicks Sporting Goods

Given that you can’t even access their site from the UK without using a VPN means it’s probably not best to order from them unless you live in the US.

Although they are a general sports store they do have a massive selection of golf equipment on offer. Ranging from topline manufacturers like Titleist through to beginners package sets.

They have a ‘best price’ guarantee and will give free shipping on certain orders over $65.

Amazon

The site that has come to dominate online retailing over the last 20 years or so.

Although you won’t necessarily find the latest clubs on Amazon you will find almost every form of accessory, clothing or footwear.

Pricing can be interesting at times, occasionally you will find a bargain. You are almost as likely is to find someone trying it on with a ridiculous price!

eBay

At one time eBay was a great source of used clubs as you could pick them up at a reasonable price. I think these days it is becoming increasingly difficult to find value for money on eBay!

Recently I decided to invest in a launch monitor but was hoping to pick one up secondhand to save some money. Unfortunately, the prices of the particular model I wanted weren’t much lower on eBay than buying new (less than 20%).

I felt that was too high a price for a used item so decided to buy it brand-new.

Looking at a lot of the clubs on eBay I would tend to come to the same conclusion. It seems people are asking almost as much for a 10-year-old club as it would have cost to buy when it was new. I just find this mind-boggling!

Costco

For the value-minded golf shopper, Costco has some relatively inexpensive golf offerings. While not necessarily up to the standards of the big manufacturers they do still offer reasonable value for money. I am currently trying out their Kirkland Signature Cabretta leather glove which seems pretty well made for the money.

Stores Based in the UK

CG Discount Golf

One of my personal favorites.

They often have massive discounts on clothing and footwear. You can also get good deals on gloves and balls.

If you’re prepared to buy from ranges of discontinued clubs then you can also pick up deep discounts there, even brands such as Ping and Callaway. The only problem will be whether they actually have the shaft/loft you might require.

Clubhouse Golf

Another site that I tend to turn to when I’m looking for some golf equipment. They can do offer very good prices and have free delivery in the UK for orders over £30 and even have the possibility of 0% finance.

If you happen to live up in Manchester then you can even try out the clubs in their custom fitting center.

American Golf

Undoubtedly the most famous golf retailer in the UK.

They have almost 100 stores but you can also order from their website.

Many stores will have a fitting bay so you can try the clubs before you buy.

While they do offer a very wide range of products I’ve never found them to be great value for money except for their sale items.

They do offer the option of interest-free credit on orders over £250 though. Useful if you’re looking to get a set of clubs.

Online Golf

Used to offer some good deals but I believe they are now part of the American Golf group. Their pricing is basically identical to the American Golf site.

Snainton Golf

Been in business for almost 20 years. Has a decent range of equipment available. If you live near their store in North Yorkshire then you can even try out clubs before you buy on their Toptracer equipped range or 9-hole par-3 course.

Run by a qualified PGA professional.

Still shipping to the European Union after Brexit.

Jam Golf

Based in Guernsey but offering free delivery to the UK on orders over £40 or to the EU over £50.

Jam Golf is run by three experienced PGA pros who offer a wide range of equipment from major manufacturers such as Callaway and TaylorMade.

Their sale doesn’t include anything at the moment!

Although a number of items do have 10 to 20% off the recommended retail price if you browse through their online store.

Scottsdale Golf

Based in Manchester staffed by a number of professionals and county players so should be good if you’re looking for some advice before buying.

To be honest I’ve never found the prices that great over the years but they do carry a wide range of the latest gear.

Golf Gear Direct

Their parent company has been trading for 30 years and if you live near their base in Kent then you could get fitted on their launch monitors.

They will happily ship products worldwide with certain order values attracting free shipping.

In terms of clubs, Golf Gear Direct stocks all the major manufacturers.

Golf Bidder

Started life back in 1997 before moving online.

They specialize in used clubs which are often bought from professionals that have taken the clubs in as a part exchange.

They also seem to have branched out more recently into new clothing and footwear.

To be honest I would say their prices are a bit on the high side. The one advantage of using GolfBidder compared with eBay is the clubs are more likely to be in good condition.

HotGolf

Originally started out as an eBay store I think but also now has retail premises. They do have some good deals most of the time on top-quality gear.

Stores Based in Europe

Planet Golf

With free delivery on orders over €100 within Germany and a wide selection of top brands such as Honma, Ping, Callaway and Taylormade. German golfers could do a lot worse than shop at Planet Golf.

American Golf (Europe)

The EU version of their UK site. The same issues apply, I’ve not found them that cheap except on the odd sale item but they do have a very broad range of products.

They do ship for free through the EU for orders over €99 or €125 depending on the destination.

They also own Online golf which offers much of the same.

Golf Friends

Run from their store in Estepona, Spain.

Golf friends offer a wide array of top brands plus accessories and clothing all of which can be ordered online.

Stores Based in Australia & New Zealand

Golf World

They have one of the best slogans: “all we slice, is the price”. They don’t have the biggest range since many items appear to be only available off-line in their store.

Drummond Golf

Their website proclaims they are Australia’s biggest golf retailer.

You can join their Drummond club for AU$40 which will get you a 10% discount across their site and a number of other benefits.

I wouldn’t say their selection of clubs is massive but they do carry many of the biggest brands.

You can get free shipping in Australia when you order more than $25.

They also offer a trade-in option but that is only available in their stores.

Golf Clearance Outlet

Another store that began life on eBay back in 2006.

Covers the whole range of golf equipment although their range of clubs isn’t that wide. They carry a mixture of top brands such as TaylorMade and lesser-known brands such as MD Golf.

The usual suspects offer the best discounts e.g. shoes and apparel.

The Best Online Golf Stores: Conclusion

The uncomfortable truth for bricks-and-mortar retailers is that they are unlikely to be able to compete where the price is an important part of the buying decision.

They are going to need to offer something over and above an ordinary shopping experience to continue to entice customers to spend money.

For golf clubs, the answer is obvious, make sure you have some form of golf simulator/fitting. It would be impossible for an online store to give that level of service!
