Jack managed to turn his hand to golf course design as his playing career began to wind down and his golf course design business is one of the largest in the world. One of his most famous designs is Muirfield Village where he hosts the Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour each year. Glen Abbey Golf Course was his first solo design and this went on to host the Canadian Open for many years.

One of his more recent designs was the Concession Golf Club in Florida. This is a joint design in collaboration with Tony Jacklin to commemorate their historic match in the 1969 Ryder Cup.
