How I Tested the Seed SD-02 and the Srixon Z-Star XV

Testing these two balls side-by-side, I’m gonna see which one will be the best for your game.

I tried both balls on the course and using a launch monitor (FlightScope Mevo).

Note that my swing speed is probably a little lower than the manufacturers of these balls would recommend.

I tend to favor the Srixon Z-Star when I’m playing but I’ll try not to let my bias toward Srixon affect my judgment.

Srixon Z-Star XV Golf Balls

The Srixon Z-Star XV Balls are a high-performance option for golfers looking for a combination of distance and control. They feature a 3-piece construction with a firmer compression core that works to deliver a low spin off the driver while still providing maximum distance and spin with your irons. The outer layer is made of a soft, spin skin coating that provides excellent feel and control around the greens. Additionally, the balls have a 338 Speed Dimple pattern that helps to reduce drag and increase lift for longer, straighter shots. Overall, the Srixon Z-Star XV Golf Balls are designed for golfers who want a balance of distance and control.

Z-Star XV Overview

If you’re looking for a golf ball that offers maximum distance, spin control, and stopping power on the green, then the Z-Star XV is an excellent choice. This premium 3-piece construction from Srixon gives skilled players complete tour performance from tee to green. Prior generations of this golf ball were 4-piece but presumably Srixon has changed the makeup of the ball to keep the costs down.

The FastLayer DG Core is soft at the center and gets firmer from the inside out, helping rebound quicker off the face for incredible distance while still providing an exceptional feel. The new Spin Skin+ Coating adds a micronic layer of specialized urethane to increase its degree of friction for more spin and control. Plus, this ball has an extra thin thermoplastic urethane cover to provide tour-level stopping power around the greens with 338 Speed Dimples that punch through the air for a penetrating launch and help it stay on target in headwinds.

Product Specs:

  • Construction: 3-piece
  • Cover: Urethane
  • Colors: White/Yellow/Divide
  • Dimples: 338
  • Flight: Mid-High

Seed SD-02 Vs. Z-Star XV

Comparing these two premium golf balls, it’s clear that both offer excellent performance on the course.

The Seed SD-02 is a 4-piece golf ball that promotes lower spin off the driver with a flatter (lower) ball flight. It also provides consistent results through the bag and an extra layer for more spin control around the greens.

In comparison, the Srixon model has an advanced “Dual Super Spin” construction which offers exceptional distance off of every club in your bag and increased control when approaching greens. Additionally, its patented SlipRes™ Technology helps to increase friction between club and ball for maximum spin on approach shots.

So, while both these urethane balls provide great performance, the Seed SD-02 is ideal for those looking for lower spin and better control, whereas the Z Star XV might be preferred by players looking to maximize distance from each shot.

Performance Off The Tee

With the driver, these two balls both provide excellent distance and trajectory – a tantalizing prospect that’ll have you itching to hit the course!

During my testing, I couldn’t find a clear winner and I would be happy to put either ball in play in terms of their performance.

If you are looking for balls to keep your driver spin at the optimal level then these should definitely be on your radar especially if you generate plenty of clubhead speed.

The XV flies marginally higher than my usual ball of choice the standard Z-Star but without a launch monitor I would struggle to pick up the differences by sight alone.

No matter what ball you choose, both of these premium golf balls offer great performance off the tee. You can’t go wrong with either one!

Performance Around The Green

When it comes to short-game performance, these two balls gave me similar spin numbers on pitches and chips and are a great option for any golfer looking to up their short game!

Both balls feel a little firmer than some of the other tour-grade balls but that is to be expected as their compression ratings are a little higher.

I had no issues with the durability of either ball. Assuming you aren’t visiting too many bunkers or bouncing off cart paths then they should be playable for multiple rounds.

So no matter which ball you choose, you’ll be sure to have reliable performance that will help improve your short game!

Who Should Buy The SD-02 and Z-Star XV

These balls are really aimed at players who currently game the Titleist Pro V1x. So players looking for a firmer ball who have relatively fast swings.

On the face of it, the Seed ball is a bargain if you are prepared to buy in bulk or use the subscription model for your purchases with prices as low as $29/dozen compared with the Srixon ball which retails for around $48. It also compares very favorably on price with a Pro V1x selling for around $50!

The Titleist Pro V1x is another popular choice for those looking to get maximum performance from their golf ball. It has less spin than the Z Star, but provides better accuracy on approaches.

Alternatives To The SD-02 and Z-Star XV

You may have already decided that the SD-02 and Z-Star XV are perfect for your game. But if you’re still looking for other options, consider these alternatives.

If you are looking at some of the best golf balls on the market then the Titleist Pro V1x, TaylorMade TP5x and Callaway Chrome Soft X should give you similar results.

If you would prefer another DTC ball then many golfers speak very highly of Snell and its MTB ball but supplies have been limited recently. Vice Golf also has a ball in this segment. The Pro Plus could be an option worth exploring and is going to be cheaper than balls you find in retail stores.

So if you’re in need of a golf ball that can help you “spin it like a pro” or “lower your scores” then these might be just the ticket!

If you are looking for a softer feel with your wedges then you will need to look at a lower compression ball such as the Titleist Pro V1, or Srixon Z Star or if you want to go really low compression then you could game the Callaway Chrome Soft which is among the lowest compression urethane balls.

If this has piqued your interest in Seed they do a range of models to cover all types of golfers:

  • SD-15
  • SD-01
  • SD-02
  • SD-05
  • SD-X1

I did a comparison of the SD-02 and SD-X1.

Who Are Seed Golf?

Seed Golf is a small direct-to-consumer ball company that is based in Ireland. Founded by an industry veteran called Dean Klatt. From the company website:

Seed was formed because we wanted to make people as passionate about the game of golf as we are. We also wanted to create golf gear that delivered great performance for golfers like us, and left enough cash to shout your mates at the bar after a round

What Type Of Ball Should You Play?

There are a few factors to consider when choosing a golf ball:

  • Budget
  • Spin
  • Distance
  • Feel
  • Trajectory

Many people would balk at paying $4 per ball so the likes of the Bridgestone Tour B, Srixon Z Star and Z Star XV would be out. Some players care more about how the golf ball feels rather than its performance so they would probably gravitate to softer-feeling balls like the Srixon Q-Star Tour or Titleist Tour Soft. Distance off the tee can be the overriding factor for certain golfers and that might be achieved by going for a distance ball like the Titleist Velocity.

Seed Sd-02 Vs Srixon Z-Star XV: Conclusion

It’s time to wrap up our look at these potential Pro V1x beaters.

After testing both golf balls, it’s clear that each is a solid offering that should serve you well if your launch conditions are matched to the design of the ball.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you need from your golf ball in order to maximize your performance on the course.
