Golf Courses Near The M1 Luton to Nottingham
Introduction
This is the second of a 4 part series on Golf Courses Near The M1. This time covering the Luton to Nottingham stretch of the Motorway.
Covering the counties of Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.
The first part of this series covers London to Luton up.
M1 Junction 13
Woburn Golf Club

Had the great pleasure of winning the mixed pairs open with my regular playing partner some years ago. The event was held on the Duchess course and the prize for first place was around on the other two courses at the estate, Dukes and the Marquess.
The original course on the estate The Dukes opened in 1976, Duchess followed in 1978 and most recently the Marquess opened in June 2000.
The courses have hosted many professional events down the years including the British Masters.
This is wine through mature parkland and you need to be accurate to stay out of the woods.
Certainly not a cheap day out but definitely worth it.

The main course at Abbey Hill Golf Centre is an 18 hole mature parkland design. You can also play a nine-hole short course and take advantage of the floodlit driving range.

Collingtree Park Golf Club Is one of the few courses designed by former Open and US Open champion Johnny Miller.
The course has matured over the last 30 years and offers a good test of golf at 6776 yards with plenty of water to catch you out!

Delapre Golf Centre has footgolf and a par-3 course available in addition to the main Oaks course. You will also find a Toptracer driving range on site.
The Oaks course looks like a mature parkland layout.

The club was originally founded in 1893. The current course was designed by Donald Steel on the grounds of the Althorp Estate, home to the Spencer family.
Northampton Golf Club is routed through some areas of mature woodland and more open areas.
Several water hazards help protect the course including an ornamental lake around which the last 3 holes are situated.

If you’re short on time then Daventry and District Golf Club might be a useful option as it’s only nine holes. There are alternative tees if you want to play a second nine.
Established in 1907 its hilltop location offers wonderful views of the Northamptonshire countryside.

A golf course that offers a prize to the best visitor in their open competition. At least they used to as I won a prize here a few years ago!
Rugby Golf Club was designed by James Braid and founded in 1891. There are quite a few par threes on the course and the most notable feature is the viaduct which overlooks the 13th tee.

Kilworth Springs Golf Club is blessed with some of the best drainage in the area due to being built on sand and shale.
More than a quarter of a century old, the course has matured rapidly to provide a links-style challenge. With the added peril of many water hazards on the back nine.
If memory serves Gary Wolstenholme used to be associated with the club.

Founded as a 9 hole club back in 1904. Lutterworth Golf Club increased to 15 holes in 1979 and added a further 3 holes in 1987.
The course is lined with mature trees and has some water hazards thrown in for good measure.

Running to almost 6500 thousand yards the golf course offers a good challenge to all but the longest hitters.
The Leicestershire Golf Club didn’t have a par-5 until quite recently despite being originally founded in 1890.
Played host to the Logan Trophy in 2019.

Began life as a nine-hole course in October 1893. It was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. Further changes were made over the years for example when part of the course went “under the plough” during the Second World War.
Kirby Muxloe Golf Club is one of only a handful of courses with a tee outside the boundaries of the course. The tee for the 5th hole is in an adjoining field and you have to tee off to get back “on course”.

A 9 hole heathland design that was influenced by James Braid. Charnwood Forest has a set of alternative tees for those wanting to play 18 holes.
Set out in 1890 this 6125 yard course is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Tom Williamson, the professional at Notts Golf club was contracted to design the course on 200 acres of the Garendon Estate at Loncliffe.
The full 18 holes were completed and ready to play by early 1907. Longcliffe Golf Club has undergone a number of changes since not least due to the building of the M1 itself.
A fine heathland layout featuring mature trees, heather and gorse. With well-presented fairways and lovely greens on the occasions that I’ve played it.

Founded in 1909. The Rushcliffe Golf Club sits in the picturesque countryside near the border with Leicestershire.
