Golf Courses Near The M1 Nottingham to Sheffield
Introduction
We are now looking at golf courses near the M1 Nottingham to Sheffield as we head further north in this third part of a series on golf courses near the M1. This time covering the Nottingham to Sheffield stretch of the motorway.
Covering the counties of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.
M1 Junction 25
Erewash Valley Golf Club
Address: Golf Club Road, Stanton By Dale, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, DE7 4QR
Telephone: 0115 932 3258
Green Fees: Mon-Thu £30. Fri and Sun £35.

Discounts: The twilight rate after 5 PM is £10 off the normal green fee.
If you are looking for a course as close as possible to the M1 then this is probably it is the course is bounded down one side by the motorway.
Some might be put off by the traffic noise but I played at a course adjacent to the M5 for many years so it didn’t affect me during my visit to Erewash Valley.
Another course that was originally laid out during the great boom at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.
Unfortunately, the building of the motorway in the 60s meant some changes to the layout. It has stayed in a mostly settled layout for 40 years or so. The only significant alteration being the construction of the new par-3 on what was the old practice ground.
This means the club has a total of 20 holes allowing them to take the “quarry” holes out of play during the winter when the weather becomes too wet.
A well-manicured parkland course that is well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Even if you don’t have time for a round you could pop in and use their driving range that is also open to the public.
M1 Junction 26
Bulwell Forest Golf Club
Address: Hucknall Road, Nottingham, NG6 9LQ
Telephone: (0115) 976 3172
Green Fees: £17 (Weekday am) £14 (Weekday pm) £20 (Weekend am) £14 (Weekend pm)
Discounts: Twilight rates after 2 pm on weekdays £10, 3 hours before sunset on weekends is £7.50!
The land on which Bulwell Forest Golf Club is situated has been used as a golf course as far back as 1889 when the Notts Golf Club was founded.
By 1894 the course had expanded to 18 holes and had hosted such luminaries as JH Taylor and Harry Vardon in matches.
In 1902 the Notts Golf Club relocated to its present site in Hollinwell so Bulwell Forest Golf Club was formed.
Today you have a tree-lined parkland course with exceptionally low green fees and a very attractive membership option.
The course is pretty short by modern standards but if you’re on a long journey up the M1 then you’re unlikely to want a 7200-yard monster!
Definitely, a course that I’ll be looking to partake of when I’m next in the area.
Golf Courses Near Nottingham
If you are looking for some other places to play near Nottingham then I can recommend both Beeston Fields Golf Club and Wollaton Park Golf Club having played competitive rounds there.
Other courses in the vicinity of Nottingham are:
- Chilwell Manor Golf Club
- Ruddington Grange Golf Club
- Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club
- The Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club
- Edwalton Golf Centre
- Mapperley Golf Club
- Stanton-on-the-Wolds Golf CLub
- Bulwell Hall Golf Course

If you want to travel slightly further from Nottingham then the three best golf courses in Nottinghamshire are near to Mansfield:
- Notts (Hollinwell) Golf Club
- Coxmoor Golf Club
- Sherwood Forest Golf Club
None of them are particularly cheap but they are excellent golf courses.
Although nearer to Derby I have also played the Priory Course at Marriott Breadsall Priory.
M1 Junction 27
Hollinwell Golf Club

This area of the country is blessed with three excellent golf courses in close proximity. In addition to Hollinwell, you could choose Coxmoor or Sherwood Forest.
A top 100 golf course that doesn’t disappoint in terms of challenge, presentation or visuals.
Has been host to final qualifying for the open championship on a number of occasions.
As with most quality courses these days the green fee now runs into triple digits. Will you ever play football at Wembley or on center court at Wimbledon? Almost certainly not but if you can afford it then pretty much any golf course is open to visitors.
Unfortunately, I have only managed to play the course on one occasion so I’ll leave the final word to an LPGA and LET star.
“Hollinwell is a real gem. What is so refreshing about Hollinwell is it’s not only a fantastic course, which is challenging yet fair, but the practice facilities are superb. A great place to sharpen and keep my game competitive.”

Coxmoor Golf Club

Telephone: (01623) 559906

Green Fees: £80 (round Mon-Fri) £95 (36 holes Mon-Fri)
A relative spring chicken when compared to many clubs but still over a hundred years old!
The original nine-hole course was set on the opposite side of Coxmoor Road. During the 20s and 30s, the club moved across to the other side of the road and developed into 18-holes.
An undulating heathland track that can stretch to as much as 6800 yards. It can prove a challenge to any golfer.
If you’re looking for another option in the area then Sherwood Forest Golf Club would be a great choice. I’ve managed to play the course on a few occasions and even managed to sneak into the prizes in pairs open.

A much newer club running to just under 6000 yards so shouldn’t be too taxing for all standards of player.
Also has a floodlit driving range on-site where you can sharpen up your game.

Founded in 1891 the club is probably most famous for hosting the Ryder Cup in 1957. This is the only Ryder Cup won by Great Britain (and eventually Europe) between 1933 and 1985!
Alistair Mackenzie even stated that Lindrick was actually the finest inland golf course in the UK.
With gorse-lined fairways and firm, fast greens the course presents a challenge to all standards of the player. It should also prove to be very playable during the winter due because of its excellent drainage.
M1 Junction 32/33
Sitwell Park Golf Club
Address: Shrogs Wood Road, Rotherham, S60 4BY
Telephone: (01709) 540961
Email: [email protected]
Green Fees: £36 (Weekday) £45 (Weekend)

Originally designed by Alistair Mackenzie the course shapes around a hillside. Presenting challenging sloping fairways and elevated undulating greens.
Not an overly long golf course but obviously a great option to consider bears the name McKenzie.
M1 Junction 34
Tinsley Park Golf Club
Address: High Hazel Park, Sheffield, S9 4PE
Telephone: (0114) 244 8974
Green Fees: £16 (Weekday) £22 (Weekend)

Another municipal course which is part of the same group as Tapton Park Golf Club.
Only a short course of 5700 yards so should prove to be a fairly quick round if you can get the time off-peak.
To be continued…
I’ll be adding the final post in this series soon – Sheffield to Leeds.
